Stop Motion Animation is a process where a poseable puppet /or figure is brought to life in a movie by breaking up the figure's motion into small steps and taking pictures of one motion at a time. When the pictures are linked together it looks like the puppet to moves by itself. The key to a great movie is building a great miniture setting which the puppets move in.
Skills we practice
Researching the topic
Creating a story board, characters, props and sets
Filming the video and editing the movie
Duringthis process you will gain a deep understanding of why certain momentsx in history were important, gain digital literacy skills and can share your finished projects with the world by placing it on our Wiki.
What story are you going to tell? How many characters will you need? What is your set design going to look like? You may choose any moment in history that you and your group feel is important.
#2 Organize your Ideas and put them together on a Storyboard
Filmmakers use storyboards to plan their films. Storyboards are a sequence of pictures with a description of the dialogue and action. They look similar to comic strips. Print off the storyboard below to use as your planning sheet. We will used the Advanced planing tool under the scripting section of Kid Vid. These will be completed and printed by your group.

#3 One of the most important parts of your film is the creation of the Set design.
The set design is the background and area your characters move in. It is the setting for your story. The better your set and characters are designed and look, the better the film shots will look. 1/2 of your grade will be based on the characters and set design. You will need to spend several hours designing and putting this together. You will need to get a box from the office, your home, use poster board. Recycle something! Do not come to class on Thursday and ask ME for a box or Poster board! This is your homework. I purchased the clay and 6 web camera's. Your part is to bring in the props and design the set.
Timeline September 29, 30, and October 1st. (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday) Planning time. Research your topic and complete the storyboard.
October 2nd and 3rd (Thursday and Friday) Come to class prepared to design your set. YOUneed to have all your material with you.
Set Construction
(
This set was built using materials found in hobby and home improvement centers.
Set building is just as basic as building a good clay figure Tools used to make sets are pretty basic. Most tools used to make sets consist of bozes, carboard, construction paper, and glue. If you already have some basic tools you may already have all you need to make a set like the professional set makers. .
Designing sets are simple as well. Sets are basically tables with a minimum of three legs. The table top part is where you place your puppets, set walls, mini props, outdoor scenery, and everything else in your created environment. There are important things that an animator needs when he or she is going to animate on a set. One of these needs is the height of the set. The set must be built at a height that is comfortable for the animator to animate puppets on. A bad design would have the top of the set too low for an animator causing the animator to hunch over for many hours on end.
Other considerations that a set designer must keep in mind is getting the camera to capture certain angles within the set. So if you were to build a kitchen set, you would need to create walls that are removable in order for the director to place the camera at either side of the room for separate shots. I like to use C-Clamps to attach walls to the frame of my sets, but you can also screw the set walls down to the set base that you built, and unscrew them when necessary.
#4 Create a script
Storyboards are a sequence of pictures with a description of the dialogue and action. They look similar to comic strips.
The script are the actual words you will be reading in any voice overs. While some of you are shooting the film others in your group should be writing the script for your voice overs. Do not skip this step!
#5 Shooting the film
1.For each scene the camera and the scenery must stay atable and still the only things that move should be the clay figures
2. LIghting-Make sure you look in the we cam window and have your set in focus
3. Pay attentionn to where your saved pictures are going. You will need to locate them when you put them into the software.
4. Lable your pictures in order It will make them earier to import.
There are several programs you may choose from to create your movie.
The Software
1. Windows Movie maker-You can to import each picture individually-so it take s a while
2. Video Blendar- Still Looking for the Video Blendar CD from Last year- The program left with the old computers and I am currently searching everywhere for the disk. I must have organized it some where.
MonkeyJam_Setup_3.0b.050529.exe This Free Ware program has the instructions under the T drive, Share Folder. 8th grade section, in the Clay Animation folder. It will give you step by step instructions for using the program-I even added some screen shots.
