Spongelab Biology - Build-A-Body and Learn Anatomy

The free online tool Build-A-Body on the Spongelab lets students piece together how the major parts of the human skeleton are connected together. In much the same way, they'll also see how the many parts of the human nervous system are connected together and work together as one entire system.

Google-Body

Google Body Browser - Learn All About Human Anatomy

Google Body Browser offers one of the most advanced ways to explore the human body in ways that you probably never imagined possible. You can explore entire systems of the human body, and strip away those complete systems to observe and explore the underlying parts of the body.

The Skeleton and Muscles

The Skeleton is the name given to the collection of bones that holds the our body up.

Our skeleton is very important to us. It does three major jobs.

  1. Protection It protects our vital organs such as the brain, the heart and the lungs.
  2. Support It gives us the shape that we have. Our skeleton supports our body, without our skeleton we would just be a blob of blood and tissue on the floor.
  3. Movement It allows us to move. Because our muscles are attached to our bones, when our muscles move, they move the bones, and we move.

Food provides us with fuel to stay a live. From food we get the energy to work and play and the raw materials to build new cells. The food we eat needs to be broken down so that our bodies can use it to make energy. Food is broken down by our digestive system and then taken around our body by the circulatory system (the blood).

1. The Human Skeleton

There are over 200 bones in the human body. Do you know what any of them are called?

Print out the Skeleton activity sheet. Can you find out the names of those bones which are labelled?

Use the Links page to find the information.

2. Word Search

Print out the Word Search activity sheet

Can you find 20 words connected with The Human Body?

There are clues on the activity sheet.

Use the Links page to find other places on the World Wide Web where the words are used.

3. Hot and Cold

A thermometer can tell us the exact temperature of something. We can only compare the temperature with that of our skin i.e. a substance is either hotter or colder than our skin.

Just below the outer layer of the skin we have two types of temperature receptors. Hot receptors respond to things hotter than our skin and cold receptors respond to things colder than our skin. They are clustered together in hot spots and cold spots.

Print out the Hot and Cold Activity sheet and try this experiment to see how these receptors work

Use the Links page to find the information.

4. Stages of Life

From the day they are born every human being develops in a similar way through certain recognisable stages e.g. baby, toddler, teenager.

Print out the Stages of life activity sheet.

Look at the photographs of this person at different stages of her life. Can you find similar photographs for a member of your family?

5. The Human Heart

The human heart is a muscle about the size of a fist. Its job is to pump blood around the body at the rate of 10 litres a minute. The heart beats around 3 billion times in an average person's lifetime.

Print out the The Human Heart activity sheet.

Can you fill in the missing labels?

Use the Links page to find the information.

6. The Body Advertising Agency

The Human Body is a complex and finely balanced machine. Each part has its own vital role to play in the smooth running of this machine.

Can you design a poster advertising a part of the body e.g. Sensational Skin, Fantastic Fingers, Beautiful Bones.

Use the Links page to find information about the body and to give you ideas for your poster.

7. How sensitive are you?

Are some parts of your body more sensitive to touch than others?

Print out the Skin Sensitivity Activity sheet. You will need a friend to work with, a washable felt pen and a fine bristle from an old hairbrush.

The palm of your hand and the sole of your foot are good areas to test.

8. What do you eat?

A balanced diet is essential for a person to keep fit and healthy and for a body to work well. This means eating something from the main food groups every day and fresh fruit and vegetables.

Print out the What do you eat Activity sheet and keep a record of what you eat for 7 days. Do you think that over the week you have eaten a balanced diet?

Use the Links page to find out what the main food groups are and what makes up a balanced diet.

9. How fast does your heart beat?

When you exercise your body needs more oxygen. Oxygen is pumped around your body in your blood by your heart. To pump more oxygen your heart has to work harder and faster.

Each time your heart beats it pushes blood through the arteries which you can feel as a pulse

Print out the How fast does your heart beat Activity sheet and try this experiment to find out how much faster your heart beats after exercise, either by yourself or with a friend.

Use the Links page to find out about what happens to your body when you exercise.
