Hector Teaches us Internet Safety

Top Tips! (from Hector's Site)

  • Always ask a grown up before you use the internet. They can help you find the best thing to do.
  • Don’t tell strangers where you live, your phone number or where you go to school. Only your friends and family need to know that.
  • Don’t send pictures to people you don’t know. You don’t want strangers looking at photos of you, your friends or your family.
  • Tell a grown up if you feel scared or unhappy about anything.
  • Ask a grown up to help you put the Hector's World Safety Button on your computer. This will mean you can press it if anything makes you scared or unhappy.

What is Personal Information?(2 min 41 sec) Closed Captioning
Knowing when it’s okay to share personal information and when it’s not can be difficult. This video defines personal information and how to protect it in terms kids can relate to.

Online "Friends" (2 min 12 sec) Closed Captioning
Connecting with friends online can be a lot of fun—but when you don’t know someone in the real world, you can’t be sure who they are. This video gives kids a simple, sensible rule for deciding how to choose online friends: stick with the friends you know in the real world to stay safe and keep things fun.

Think Before you Post

"Think Before You Post” is an ad campaign by the ad council. The videos below demonstrate how truly wide-reaching any information posted on the internet can be. Of course, the majority of people online are viewing your mySpace pages just to learn more about you as a friend and have no bad intentions……. (oh wait, remember how I said today that you HAVE TO BE 14 TO HAVE A PAGE? 6th graders, remember that by lying about your age to get a page, you’re violating the terms of use with mySpace - make a responsible choice.)

Thoughts? Are adults making too big of a deal about this? Do you feel safe online? Even if you are not using your real name areyou giving clues about who you are, wheer you live and your agewithout realizing it? Instead of posting your picture create yourown cartoon character-you friends already know what you look like! With Yahoo's " Way Back Machine" web pages are saved back to 1995 already.

DO NOT POST ANYTHING YOUR PARENTS. CHURCH, POTENIAL HIGH SCHOOL,  COLLEGES OR FUTURE EMPLOYERS MAY NOT UNDERSTAND.

Areas we will Cover

1.  What is RSS

2. Choose a pseudonymn now! Write what your pseudo  name  on  our Wiki.  Create a paragraph  explaining why  it's important to use a pseudo.

    This is worth 10 points.

3. Safer IMing

     a. Only include people you know on your IM list, whether AIM, MSN, Yahoo Messenger, Google Talk, or Meebo.

     b. I.M.  is a great tool for schoolwork! You can collaborate on homework, assignments, & projects easily and cheaply.-But if you are not careful you could set up

your account so anyone can IM you, not just the people you know. Go check your preferences right now and change them if necessary!

     c. Never set a profile that gives away your personal info! Either skip the profile or make it up.

4. You should use your pseudo name on  your IM account - protect your privacy!!-Remember real live people are on the other side of that IM

     - be respectful!! If you wouldn't say it to your grandmother, the principal or me-DON'T  TYPE  IT!

5. Play The Game then write a paragraph or two about why Jesus would not flame. Don't forget all the requirements of a post.

6. Never "borrow" a friends I. M. name or pretend you are them on-line. Remember ISP's have your IP number and can easily track your conversation to the computer account it came from. Deflamation law does apply to anything you write and publish on the internet- Both you and your parents can be held responsible.
