M.E.T.S.

Michigan Educational Technology Standards

This page is created to give students practice in demonstrating key performance objects as outlined in the M.E.T.S. All students entering High School should be able to demonstrate they have met these challenges. Many public schools require that students have passed the METS or are required to take a basic computer literacy course.

I have tried to assemble some interactive activities on this site for Students to use to demonstrate competency!

I will compile a short set classroom tasks which will assess your ability to create and communicate  solutions that demonstrate you have the aquired the ability to use technology tools .

Practice in the areas below and you be certified as passing the M.E.T.'s!

1. Basic Operations and Concepts: Students demonstrate a sound understanding of the nature and operation of technology systems.

Identify common hardware and software difficulties and identify strategies for trouble-shooting and problem solving.

Know:Students need to be able to write the definition for: OS, ISP, desktop, control panels, display settings, folders, CPU, mother board ,

input devices, PCMCIA,Wireless, touch pad, router, server,IP address, network, LAN.

Demonstrate:Students need to be able to demonstrate the following: changing desktop settings, creating a folder, renaming a folder, saving to a network drive, uploading and downloading data, as well as using CDRW's, Flash Drives, and Scanners.

Practice with this on-line interactive quizz

2. Students are proficient in the use of technology.

Skills in keyboarding , accurate technology terminology, using  a variety of technology tools , identify a variety of information storage devices (e.g., floppies, CDs, DVDs, flash drives, distinguish file formats for a variety of applications, proofread and edit writing using word processing tools, as well as identifying which software applications are best suited for which type of project.

Know students need to be able to define: flash drive, CD, CDRW, .doc, .jpg, .xls, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, slide shows, podcasts, C.A.D., HTML

Demonstrate: students need to be able to create posters, brochures, photostory slide shows, CAD drawings, simple web pages, and determine which program is appropriate for assigned tasks

3.  Social, ethical, and human issues

Students need to discuss issues related to acceptable and responsible use of technology (e.g., privacy, security, copyright, plagiarism, spam, viruses, file-sharing).  Students identify carreers that use technology.

Know  copyright law, educational use, is there on line privacy?, security issues, password security

Demonstrate: Play the following game that demonstrates on line safety for Im and chat -It's silly-Start Game

4. Technology productivity tools. Students use technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity.

Apply common software features thesaurus, formulas, charts, graphics, andsounds to enhance communication and to support creativity, use a variety of resources, including the internet, demonstrate the use of  basic applications  by using graphics, presentation, photo-editing, programming, video-editing, as well as using utilities for editing pictures, images, or charts. Students need to use collaborative tools to design, develop, and enhance materials, publications, and  presentations.

Know and identify toolbar shortcuts and icons in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Be able to locate the following tool bars: Drawing, Standard, Format, and Menu. Be able to locate and identify software that can be used to edit photo's, add effects, and sites where photo's can be stored; name 2 types of programming languages, and bookmark websites that allow you to be productive on-line. Demonstrate: create a simple web page, draw, print and share a CAD drawing, locate and bookmark the following productivity sites

tell what each site offers!

5. Technology communications tools

Students  demonstrate the use of  telecommunications to collaborate, publish, and interact with peers, experts, and other audiences.

Students access and use wiki's, blogs, video-conferences, chat paks  or other online resources to collaborate interactively with peers, experts, and other audiences.

Students create a projects :presentation, web page, newsletter, information brochure) using a variety of media and formats  to present content information to an audience.

Know and  what a wiki is and locate a wiki at http://21cif.imsa.edu/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

Demonstrate and  prractice using a blog at:  http://21cif.imsa.edu/blog/  Be sure to keep it appropriate as they do record

IP addresses and it leads us back to your computer workstation. Be sure that your pod cast is uploaded to the share folder so you can get credit for it.

6. Technology research tools: Students use technology to locate, evaluate, and collect information from a variety of sources.

Use a variety of Web search engines to locate information.  Info should be evaluated  from various online resources for accuracy, bias, appropriateness

Know: difference between a search engine and a browser, how to check sources, how to evaluate the authors or organizations purpose: is it fact, opinion or a mixture of both?

Demonstrate by using the sites below

1.       Students know how to create and populate a database.  Take the data  base challenge http://21cif.imsa.edu/rkitp/challenge/archerychallenge/archery_2.swf

2. Evaluated web sites http://21cif.imsa.edu/tools/evaluawhat a ste/evalWizard_beta_1.1.html

7. Technology problem-solving and decision-making tools

Students use technology resources for solving problems and making informed decisions.

Students use computer simulation programs to test ideas and make choices that affect outcomes.

Know what a simulation is and why we use it

Demonstrate by playing 3 of the following simulation programs
